Siting the nest box

Barns owls prefer open countryside over woodlands. To attract them, install a nest box with a clear entrance in an open area on the edge of a wooded area. Position the box 2.5-5 meters high on a tree, building, or barn facing east, northeast or southeast to provide a clear flight path.

Avoid placing the box within 1/2 mile of major roads, as barn owls are at high risk of being hit by vehicles when hunting due to their low flight patterns.

When selecting the site, ensure the presence of vole-rich grasslands and less intensively managed habitats, which are key factors for an optimal barn owl nesting location.
